What grows when a budding artist meets soil, light, and MACRE?
Our Artist-In-Incubator program isn’t just about making art — it’s about growing together. We welcome emerging artists with kind hearts and strong creative spirits who may lack access to space, resources, or support. At MACRE, we nurture a sustainable, collaborative environment where artists have a safe space to experiment freely and build lasting relationships — with the earth, the art, and each other. This is a place to take root, take care, and create something that truly matters for our community.
MAKE NOISE COOL
SUMMER 2025
Open Call: SUMMER 2025
Our summer theme is Make Noise Cool—an exploration of the creative sparks that fly when different people, ideas, and art forms collide. What first seems like noise can reveal beauty, connection, and new possibilities. In a loud world, MACRE embraces this beautiful noise as a cooling force for change.
Duration: July 14 – September 5 (1.5 months)
Location: 150 sq. ft. private studio plus shared workspace at the MACRE House, located in the heart of downtown Ithaca.
Support Package includes:
– A biweekly stipend
– MACRE membership (1-year individual or 6-months each for a duo)
– Gift card for art materials (valid at ReUse Center & Creative Reuse Ithaca)
+ Technical support with Arduino, MaxMSP, Processing, and other computing/AI tools by in-house engineers Norm Scott and Leo Kang.
Details about the full package will be shared with selected applicants.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
We’re looking for an artist or duo (team of two people) who thrive in the in-between—where differences meet, spark, and grow into something new.

– A filmmaker, poet, or storyteller blending folklore, movement, and media
– An experimental musician building DIY instruments or new sound tools
– An artist turning science or data into visual, interactive, or living works
– A painter, sculptor, or dancer curious about using tech in your practice
– A journalist or activist developing creative, civic-minded media

WHO'S IN THE INCUBATOR NOW?
We are excited to welcome Leo (Laewoo) Kang as our very first Artist-in-Incubator (Spring 2025)! Leo is an independent researcher and artist based in Ithaca whose work bridges Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and media art. His practice explores how artistic methods can be powerful tools for learning and research within computing and broader STEM fields. During his residency, Leo will focus on two key themes: (a) electronics on canvas and (b) the creative reuse of e-waste.
