We are MACRE Ithaca!
Located at 415 N. Tioga St. in downtown Ithaca, Media Arts Collective + Research Exchange [MACRE] (pronounced "maker") is a "third space" for sustained creative work, play, and community skill-building. Since opening in June 2025, we have established ourselves as a hub for media-making and experimentation, dedicated to expanding access to creative resources for marginalized and underfunded communities.
MACRE is both a physical studio and a research lab—a space where art, engineering, and the humanities intersect to foster meaningful public dialogue.
OUR COLLECTIVE MISSION
While MACRE continues to evolve, our central goal remains steadfast: to expand access to media tools, skills, and resources for marginalized and underfunded communities. By centering community voices, we use creative expression to address real-world issues and build a shared sense of purpose. Our mission is grounded in three key commitments:
Participatory Media & Research
We practice a collaborative approach that ensures communities are involved at every stage—from ideation and creation to public reflection. Through our Intern-cubator and residency programs, we facilitate "technical conduits" that bridge the gap between an artist’s vision and the community’s engagement, fostering collective ownership of the creative process.
Civic Engagement & Justice
We see media as a tool for justice. Inspired by the legacy of local figures like Dorothy Cotton, we use public art, somatic witnessing, and "Long-Distance Presence" technology to advance democracy and human rights. Our work in Disability Justice and HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) ensures that creative expression remains a right, even for those navigating physical or systemic barriers.
Community-Based Cooperation
MACRE is rooted in cooperative values. We work with local partners to amplify voices without relying on advertising, operating instead as a shared "third space." We are building toward a member-owned model that strengthens the Ithaca area through shared media creation, meaningful dialogue, and mutual support.

PhotoSynthesis Productions
PhotoSynthesis Productions (PSP)—founded in 1980—is our anchor partner and co-producer. PSP provides MACRE with its physical home, a fully equipped film studio, and access to professional-grade video gear, editing software, and production mentorship. With PSP’s infrastructure and support, MACRE members are able to initiate, develop, and complete ambitious projects that would otherwise be out of reach.

The Village at Ithaca
The Village at Ithaca, Through Director of Special Initiatives Grace Azaula, brings youth-driven project ideas into our space. Grace accompanies Village youth to MACRE, where they access video production tools, mentorship, and creative space to develop media rooted in their lived experiences. Grace is also an Ithaca College alum and serves on our MACRE Advisory Committee, deepening the ties between Village and our media collective.

StudioLab
StudioLab at Cornell University, directed by artist-scholar Jon McKenzie, is another vital partner. In April 2025, MACRE hosted StudioLab’s Comics, Posters PAR+D exhibition, showcasing transmedia knowledge work by first-year Cornell students. These projects used creative media to tackle complex issues like AI, climate justice, and geopolitical conflict. We plan to co-host future exhibitions and events that integrate research, community storytelling, and design-based learning.
